Fontaines D.C. displayed signs calling for a “free Palestine” and accused Israel of genocide during their set at Primavera Sound 2025.

The Dublin band played at the Parc Del Forum festival in Barcelona on Saturday night (June 7) and during ‘I Love You’ from 2022’s ‘Skinty Fia‘ near the end of the set, a giant Palestinian flag was projected onto the screen behind them and the words “free Palestine” appeared on the screens to the side of the stage.

Frontman Grian Chatten echoed the sentiment during the set, and as they brought the concert to a close with ‘Starburster’ from 2024’s ‘Romance’, another message appeared reading: “Israel is committing genocide – use your voice”.

The band have been consistent in their support for the people of Palestine. Last year, they launched a football shirt with the Dublin club Bohemians FC that raised money for Medical Aid For Palestinians. It features the Palestinian flag and the words “Saoirse don Phalaistín” (Irish language for ‘Free Palestine’), and Greta Thunberg was recently seen wearing one. Visit here to buy yours.

Last summer, the band also donated their $2,000 (£1,565) prize from a viral music quiz to Doctors Without Borders “for Palestine”. The band later cancelled a scheduled show in Istanbul in solidarity with Palestine, saying that they “must be clear in our convictions”.

Chatten then explained why the group want to use their platform to speak out during an interview with NME – making a nod to the 12″ benefit single Fontaines released with Massive Attack and Young Fathers.

“It becomes incredibly tiring and disenfranchising, not just as a musician but as a young person, to be talking about and raising awareness,” he said. “At some point, you’ve got to do something that feels a bit more tangible, you know?

“It really is the responsibility of the masses, of artists, and anyone with a voice – which is most people nowadays – to do something, say something. Which side are you on?”

They are far from the only musicians to have used their voice to speak on behalf of Palestine recently: IDLES dedicated their own Primavera Sound set to the people of Gaza and the West Bank, leading the crowd in a chant of “Viva Palestina!”, while Sam Fender gave a passionate pro-Palestine speech during a London stadium show this week.

Massive Attack, meanwhile, played a powerful headline set at LIDO Festival in London on Friday (June 6), where they were introduced by the actor and pro-Palestine activist Khalid Abdalla, who gave an impassioned speech in which he called for peace in the Middle East and an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

As the conflict escalates, Israel continues to deny any allegations of genocide or war crime.

This year’s edition has seen the festival return to the Parc del Fòrum in Barcelona, Spain, featuring a stacked line-up that includes Carpenter alongside fellow headliners Charli XCX and Chappell Roan.

Last night’s (June 6) set coincided with the release of ‘Manchild‘ – the first new track from the pop star in 2025, following on from her dominating the charts last year with singles including ‘Espresso’, ‘Please, Please, Please’ and ‘Taste’.

The new single got its live debut at the festival, alongside a slew of fan favourites like ‘Feather’, ‘Nonsense’ and ‘Bed Chem’ – with the latter reimagined with a dance interlude featuring Ginuwine’s ‘Pony’.

Another surprise addition came after Carpenter teased The Weather Girls track, telling the sold-out crowd: “There is a lot of moisture in the air. It’s weird, I feel like there might be a storm coming… Oh shit, guys I think it’s raining!” before launching into the 1983 single.

Fans streaming the performance on Amazon Music later took to social media to note she was singing in a lower register than normal, with one taking to X/Twitter to say: “I’m so obsessed with her vocals omg.”

Another added that the lower vocals were “heavenly”, while another user pointed out that although it wasn’t a ‘Short N Sweet’ tour date, the cover “maybe counted as a ‘Spin The Bottle’ cover song”.

The tradition has seen her cover songs chosen by a game of Spin the Bottle with her backup dancers, and was adopted in her live sets after she scrapped her usual adlibbed ‘Nonsense’ outros ahead of kicking off her world tour last year.

The moment took place last night (June 5), as Charli XCX took to the stage at the opening night of the Spanish festival to headline along Trove Sivan. The two delivered a stacked co-headline show, and the setlist featured all the huge hits from the former’s mammoth ‘Brat’ album.

She was the first to headline the festival, with later headline sets coming from Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan.

In one part of the set, the latter made a surprise appearance, performing the viral dance to ‘Apple’ that took TikTok by storm last year.

Taking place 20 songs into the 31-song setlist, the Primavera set held the same tradition that is seen at all of Charli XCX’s shows, where the camera spins around to one person in the crowd and they break out a rendition of the viral dance. This time around, the camera turned to fellow headliner Roan, who put on some sunglasses and broke out the routine for fans.

She is far from the first famous face to get involved in the viral dance craze. Last summer, Charli took to social media following a compilation of renditions from the likes of Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos, and revealed to fans that the song nearly didn’t make the final cut for ‘Brat’.

In May, BLACKPINK‘s Rosé also took on the choreography at a concert in Brooklyn, and before then, others who joined in on the dance trend included Dave Grohl, Joe Jonas, Stephen Colbert, and Charli’s fiancé, The 1975‘s drummer George Daniel.

Charli XCX announced last December that she would be enlisting Sivan for her headline Primavera set, following the two of them embarking on a ‘SWEAT’ US tour with him earlier that year.

Those shows came following a solo UK arena tour, and she would later tell Variety that the extensive run of shows was “really hard emotionally,” but touring with Sivan made the endeavour “a lot easier and less of an emotional battle for me.”

Scheduled for later this year, Charli has curated her own day at London’s Lido Festival and is set to play two outdoor shows in Belfast and Dublin. IDLES and frontman Joe Talbot have dedicated their Primavera Sound Festival 2025 set to Palestine.

The Bristol band – who have long been vocal supporters of Palestine in the Israel-Gaza war – displayed a strong showing of support at Primavera Sound on Thursday (June 5) in Barcelona.

Talbot kicked off the band’s set by yelling “Free Palestine!” right at the start of their opening number ‘Colossus’, and the band dedicated the entirety of their set to Palestine.

Elsewhere during their performance, Talbot led minutes-long chants of “Viva Palestina!”, which translates to “long live Palestine”. He at one point also asked the audience “Donde esta las Palestinas? (Where are the Palestinans?)”

The vocalist also wore a white t-shirt with a watermelon emblem, a symbol of support for Palestine. The back of his shirt read: “You’ll never walk alone.”

During the band’s performance of ‘Divide and Conquer’, Talbot weaved chants of “Free free Palestine” into the opening riff. “This song is an anti-fascist song. It’s dedicated to the people of Palestine,” he said, introducing the tune – check it out from the 26-minute mark above.

This is far from the first time the band have thrown their support behind Palestine. At Glastonbury last year, the Bristol band led a protest-fuelled performance, once again dedicating the set to the people of Palestine – it earned them a five-star review from NME.

In February last year, IDLES showed solidarity for Palestine at their ‘Tangk’ launch show in Brixton. Several times during that show, Talbot voiced his support for the people of Gaza suffering as a result of the war with Israel. Introducing ‘Mother’, he paid tribute to his own late mum’s social conscience and told the crowd: “I know deep within my heart, that if she was alive today, she would want me to say: ‘Long live Palestine’.”

During ‘The Wheel’, he altered the lyrics to the chorus to “Can I get a hallelujah? Viva Palestina“, before dedicating the ode to immigrants ‘Danny Nedelko’ to the people of Gaza and singing: “My blood brother’s Palestinian, my best friend is a citizen, he’s strong, he’s earnest, he’s innocent.”

Most recently, IDLES have thrown their support behind Irish rap trio Kneecap, who have been at the center of controversy for their vocal support of Palestine. The band are just one of numerous acts to sign a letter championing artists’ freedom of expression.

The letter came after Kneecap’s Mo Chara was charged and investigated for a terror offence after allegedly displayed a Hezbollah flag at a show in last November and made controversial comments about members of parliament while on stage.

This year’s edition will see the festival return to the Parc del Fòrum in Barcelona, Spain, and is fully sold out. Marking the 23rd edition of Primavera Sound, it features a stacked line-up that includes Charli XCX, Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan as headliners.

Running between today and Saturday (June 5-7), Amazon Music will exclusively stream all coverage of the event.

The broadcast will be available on its Twitch and Prime Video platforms, and footage is set to begin each day that the festival runs from 1:30pm ET.

As well as showcasing some of the most highly anticipated live performances of the event, the coverage from Amazon will also include interviews with artists and various content showing the behind-the-scenes of the festival.

Charli XCX’s performance will be part of a co-headline set with Troye Sivan, following the two hitting the road together last year in celebration of the success of the former’s ‘Brat’ album.

For Chappell Roan, the headline slot comes as the former NME Cover star has been taking over the charts in the last 12 months with hits like ‘Pink Pony Club’ and ‘Good Luck, Babe!’. It also follows her dropping the highly anticipated single ‘The Giver’ in March and sharing an update on when fans can expect her sophomore album.

The addition of Wolf Alice follows the group returning with their huge new single ‘Bloom Baby Bloom’. Released yesterday (May 15), the track serves as the first preview of Ellie Rowsell and co’s fourth album ‘The Clearing’ – out August 29 via Sony Music (pre-order here).

Their upcoming performance at Primavera Sound will come after their three last-minute gigs in Ireland next week and their appearance at Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2025. Next month, Wolf Alice will return to Worthy Farm for Glastonbury Festival.

These forthcoming dates will mark the band’s first full live shows together since late 2022. Their third album, the acclaimed ‘Blue Weekend’, was released the previous year. It went to Number One in the UK and was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize.

In a glowing five-star review of ‘Bloom Baby Bloom’, NME praised Wolf Alice for being “bolder and more brilliant than ever”. It added: “After three albums of building and expanding their world, and experiencing the ups and downs of the music industry, it feels like the band are ready to stake their claim as one of their generation’s most important acts. Now, Wolf Alice are undoubtedly in full bloom.”

Produced by Greg Kurstin (Foo Fighters, Adele, Beck), ‘The Clearing’ is Wolf Alice’s major label debut following their departure from Dirty Hit.

Clairo has announced that she will be unable to play at this year’s Primavera Sound in Barcelona due to “logistical issues”.

The artist had been due to play the festival on Saturday June 6, sharing the bill that day with Sabrina Carpenter, HAIM, Beach House, TV On The Radio, Wet Leg and others. The Parc Del Fòrum bash will see its other days headlined by Charli XCX and Chappell Roan.

However, on Friday (May 9), the festival confirmed with a post on its Instagram Stories that Clairo will now not be appearing this year after all.

“We are deeply saddened by this news and share the fans’ frustration,” Primavera wrote. “We, too, were very much looking forward to welcoming her again at Primavera Sound Barcelona.”

They then shared a message from Clairo herself, who said: “Unfortunately, I’m not able to make it to Primavera this year and I’m so sad about it, because Primavera is iconic and returning to the fest is something I’ve been looking forward to for ages.”

She continued: “There are some logistical issues with getting my show to/from Primavera that have forced my hand here. I never want to give my fans anything but the absolute best set I can do, and that won’t be possible at this time. I’m so sorry again and I hope to be able to make it up to you sooner than later.”

Clairo is still scheduled to play at a number of festivals this summer, including Governor’s Ball in New York, BST Hyde Park in London, Hinterland in Iowa, Lollapalooza in Chicago and All Things Go in Washington and New York.

She also played at Coachella last month, where her set was introduced by Bernie Sanders, who praised her campaign work and called on her fans to “fight for social justice”.

Last year’s edition of Primavera, meanwhile, saw sets from the likes of Pulp, Lana Del Rey, The National, SZA and Troye Sivan.

In a four-star review of the festival, NME concluded: “After a weekend in its midst, it’s not hard to see why Primavera Sound is so beloved. There are few gripes to be had here, and the main one is the several agonising clashes you have to do battle with each day – a problem that can only come with having such a stacked line-up in the first place. A fun, freeing few days in Barcelona full of great music is never something to complain about, though. Roll on 2025.”

Charli XCX has announced she and Troye Sivan will reunite for ‘SWEAT PT. 2’ at her Primavera Sound headline slot next year.

Earlier this year, Charli – who is headlining Primavera alongside Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter in what she dubbed a “holy trinity” – embarked on the ‘SWEAT’ US tour alongside Sivan, making stops in major cities such as Toronto, New York, Philadelphia, Miami, Denver, Los Angeles and more.

Having then wrapped up a solo UK arena tour in support of her wildly successful sixth studio album, ‘Brat,’ she later told Variety the extensive run of shows was “really hard emotionally,” but she added that touring with Sivan earlier this year made the endeavour “a lot easier and less of an emotional battle for me.”

“For me to give a performance I feel is good enough, I have to really physically throw myself around and that makes me very upset when I do it,” she explained. “It’s kind of this hellhole, but being with Troye softens that a lot.”

Now, the ‘Brat’ singer has announced they’ll be reunited at the Barcelona festival next year.

Taking to social media, XCX wrote: “ok so i know it’s already been announced that im headlining primavera next year, but i had this idea……… @troyesivan u wanna ?”. Text that read: “SWEAT PT. 2” was shared in a follow-up post on X/Twitter.

NME caught Charli and Sivan’s ‘Sweat’ tour and gave it a glowing five-star review. “As they wrap up the night with performances of their collaborations ‘1999’ and the ‘Talk Talk’ remix, it’s clear that they’ve both not just mastered their craft but are now getting the recognition they deserve. ‘Brat’ summer might be over, but these two are just getting started.”

Meanwhile, her culture-dominating June release ‘Brat’ has been named as the Album of the Year by NME. “‘Brat’ as cultural sensation was a sight to behold, to be sure. The festival announced its 2025 line-up last month, with Charli XCX, Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter all set to headline. Following the line-up announcement, XCX took to X to nod to their collective pop cultural force, saying: “headlining primavera sound next year with sabrina and chappell. finally holy trinity unlocked ;)”

The 23rd edition of the festival, returning to the Parc del Fòrum from June 4-8 in the Spanish city, will also see performances from LCD Soundsystem, FKA Twigs, HAIM, Jamie xx, Fontaines D.C., Beach House, IDLES, Clairo, Turnstile and more.

The initial gender-balanced line-up of 147 artists also features TV On The Radio, Sturgill Simpson, ANOHNI and the Johnsons, Floating Points, Stereolab, Spiritualized and Parcels among many more.

Now, Primavera Sound has revealed its day splits. Charli XCX will be heading up the line-up on Friday, June 5, Carpenter on Saturday, June 6 and Roan on Sunday, June 7.

This summer’s edition of the acclaimed Barcelona festival saw sets from the likes of Pulp, Lana Del Rey, The National, SZA and Troye Sivan.

In a four-star review of the festival, NME concluded: “After a weekend in its midst, it’s not hard to see why Primavera Sound is so beloved. There are few gripes to be had here, and the main one is the several agonising clashes you have to do battle with each day – a problem that can only come with having such a stacked line-up in the first place. A fun, freeing few days in Barcelona full of great music is never something to complain about, though. Roll on 2025.”

In other news, the line-up for Primavera Sound Porto 2025 was revealed last week, also with Charli XCX on the bill. Joining her will be Deftones, Fontaines D.C., Central Cee, Jamie xx, Beach House, Haim, Michael Kiwanuka and Turnstile.

Charli XCX, Deftones, Fontaines D.C. and more have been announced as part of Primavera Sound Porto 2025’s line-up.

The annual music bash will take place on June 12 through 15 at the Parque Da Cidade in Porto, Portugal. Other acts set to headline include Central Cee, Jamie xx, Beach House, Haim, Michael Kiwanuka and Turnstile.

The rest of the lineup includes Floating Points (live), Caribou, ANHONI and the Johnsons, Denzel Curry, TV on the Radio, Wet Leg, Cap’n Jazz, Kim Deal, Los Campesinos!, The Jesus Lizard, Waxahatchee, Fcukers, Been Stellar, Destroyer, Magdalena Bay, Squid, This is Lorelei, Chat Pile, High Vis, Angélica Garcia, and more.

General and VIP weekend passes for the festival are on sale now and can be purchased here. A 10 per cent discount on a full festival ticket is available for Revolut customers and payment plans are also available via Kaboodle.

The line-up announcement for Primavera Sound Porto 2025 comes two weeks after the announcement of the line-up for its sister festival, Primavera Sound Barcelona.

The 23rd edition of the festival, returning to the Parc del Fòrum from June 4-8 in the Spanish city, will also see performances from LCD Soundsystem, IDLES, Clairo, Sturgill Simpson, Floating Points, Stereolab, Spiritualized, Parcels and more.

At the time of writing, the line-ups for Primavera Sound Buenos Aries and Primavera Sound Sãn Paulo have yet to be announced.

Charli XCX’s headline slot comes after years of becoming a festival favourite, choosing last year’s Primavera to debut ‘Everything Is Romantic’ ahead of the release of the universally-acclaimed album ‘Brat’ and the cultural phenomenon it became.
